West Bengal's forest department plans to relocate a tigress from Bihar's Valmiki Tiger Reserve to Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar district to revive its tiger population.
Three young adult tigresses have been selected from 12 shortlisted; teams from Bengal and the Wildlife Institute of India are to travel to Valmiki, and 2 October has been set for bringing the tigress to Buxa.
She will first be kept, radio-collared, in a 2.2-hectare enclosure; a female was preferred because males roam more widely in search of mates.
Buxa had about 25-26 resident tigers in the early 1990s, but numbers collapsed by the early 2000s under heavy biotic pressure from villages inside the forest.
Buxa lies in the Terai-Bhabar and sub-Himalayan belt of north Bengal. Its northern edge runs along the Bhutan border (Sinchula range) and its eastern edge along Assam, marked by the Sankosh river. It forms a corridor with Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary (Bhutan) and Manas National Park (Assam). Valmiki, the source reserve, adjoins Nepal's Chitwan National Park.
