The Government released the Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Operational Guidelines at the 16th Central Council of Health and Family Welfare meeting on 29 June 2026.
The programme moves from the earlier 6x6x6 strategy to a 7x7x7 framework.
The approach shifts from T3 — Test, Treat, Talk — to T4, adding Track.
Haemoglobin testing is to be saturated using digital invasive haemoglobinometers.
Nutritional and non-nutritional anaemia are to be segregated for appropriate case-based management.
Anaemia means the blood carries too little haemoglobin to deliver oxygen efficiently, and the most common cause in India is iron deficiency — which is why iron and folic acid supplementation has been the backbone of policy. But not all anaemia is nutritional. It can also arise from chronic infection, worm infestation, malaria, sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and other inherited haemoglobin disorders. Giving iron tablets to someone whose anaemia is genetic does not help and in some conditions can cause harm through iron overload. That is why the new guidelines insist on segregating nutritional from non-nutritional anaemia before treatment — it converts a blanket supplementation programme into a diagnostic one.
Simple Analogy: Refilling the tank does not help if the problem is a hole in it — you have to find out which fault you are dealing with first.

Waiting before clamping the umbilical cord allows more blood to transfer from placenta to newborn, raising the infant's iron stores — a zero-cost intervention that is why it sits alongside supplementation in the seven interventions
