India won 17 medals on the opening day of the Under-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria.
The championship began on August 9, 2026 and runs until August 14, 2026.
India took four gold medals — Nikhil Wagh, Joys Ashita, Prachi Lohan and Jeferlin.
Medals came across all three fencing weapons: sabre, foil and epee.

Olympic fencing uses three weapons, and each has its own target area and rules. In FOIL, only the torso counts as a valid target and hits are scored with the point. In EPEE, the entire body is a valid target, again with the point only. In SABRE, everything above the waist except the hands counts, and both the edge and the point may score. All three feature in Commonwealth and Olympic competition, which is why medal tallies are reported weapon by weapon.
