Khudiram Bose came of age amid the ferment following the Partition of Bengal in 1905, and joined Jugantar, where he was trained in secret operations and arms handling. Douglas Kingsford was targeted because of his harsh sentencing of Indian nationalists. The attempt failed in its object — Kingsford survived, while two British women died — and this outcome is part of the historical record that should not be softened. What followed nonetheless made Khudiram a symbol: accounts describe him walking to the gallows with composure at eighteen, and his execution strengthened the revolutionary current in Bengal and drew many young Indians into the movement.
