The PLFS Quarterly Bulletin for April-June 2026 puts the overall Labour Force Participation Rate for those aged 15 and above at 54.6%.
That is down from 55.5% in the preceding quarter, with rural LFPR falling to 56.9% while urban LFPR held at 50.2%.
The urban unemployment rate was broadly stable at 6.7%; the rural rate rose to 4.8% from 4.3%.
Overall unemployment stood at 5.4%, with youth unemployment considerably higher at 15.9%.
The bulletin is released by the National Statistical Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
LFPR is the share of the population that is in the labour force — that is, either working or actively seeking work. WPR is the share of the population that is actually working. The Unemployment Rate is the share of the LABOUR FORCE (not the population) that is seeking work but not finding it. The different denominators are what examiners test: unemployment rate uses the labour force as its base, while LFPR and WPR both use the population.
Simple Analogy: Of 100 adults, if 55 are working or job-hunting, LFPR is 55%. If 52 are actually working, WPR is 52%. The 3 who are hunting but jobless give an unemployment rate of 3/55, not 3/100.
