Astronomers announced on 19 August 2026 the identification of S301 as the fastest known star in the Milky Way.
S301 reaches about 25,000 km per second at closest approach, roughly 8 per cent of the speed of light.
It completes one orbit of the galaxy's central black hole, Sagittarius A*, in 8.7 years.
At closest approach it passes within about 12 astronomical units, or nearly 1.8 billion km, of the black hole.
The discovery, published in Nature, used the GRAVITY+ instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer in Chile.
In Einstein's general theory of relativity, mass tells spacetime how to curve. A mass that is also rotating does something further: it drags the surrounding spacetime around with it. Anything orbiting inside that dragged region has its orbit slowly rotated as well. Because the size of the effect depends on how fast the central body spins, measuring the twist in a nearby star's orbit is a way of measuring the black hole's spin.
