Christmas Island is not a fragment of a continent. It is the top of a volcano that grew from the deep ocean floor, rising more than 4,500 metres, of which only about 300 to 360 metres stands above the sea. Once such a seamount reaches the surface in warm tropical water, corals colonise its rim. As the volcanic pile slowly subsides and erodes, coral growth keeps pace near sea level and builds a thick limestone cap over the old volcanic rock. Later uplift lifts that limestone platform clear of the water, which is why the island today presents sheer limestone cliffs rising to a central plateau rather than a volcanic cone. The same sequence, volcanic seamount followed by carbonate capping, explains many isolated islands and atolls across the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Simple Analogy: The volcano built the pillar; the corals put a stone table top on it; later movement of the crust raised the table above the water.
