Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, secured approval for six biomedical research grants from the Indian Council of Medical Research on 20 August 2026.
The grants total about Rs 15 crore and are led mainly by the university's Institute of Medical Sciences.
The projects cover early detection of gallbladder cancer, antimicrobial resistance, post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis diagnostics, paediatric septic shock and precision oncology for renal cell carcinoma.
The work will use cohort studies, precision clinical trials, multi-omics biomarker discovery and laboratory analyses, drawing in the Institute of Science and collaborating engineering departments.

A biomarker is any measurable signal - a molecule in blood, a pattern of gene expression - that reliably indicates a disease state or predicts how a patient will respond to treatment. Older studies looked at one layer at a time, usually genes. Multi-omics combines several: genomics for the DNA sequence, transcriptomics for what is being read out of it, proteomics for the proteins produced, and metabolomics for the chemical products of cell activity. Combining them raises the chance of finding a signal that shows up early, which is precisely what a cancer like gallbladder carcinoma, usually detected late, requires.
Simple Analogy: Diagnosing an engine fault from the sound alone is guesswork; listening while also reading temperature, pressure and fuel flow finds it much sooner.
