World Mosquito Day is observed every year on 20 August to raise awareness of mosquito-borne diseases and the measures that control them.
The date marks Sir Ronald Ross's discovery in 1897, while serving in India, that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit the malaria parasite.
Ross received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1902 and was the first Briton to win the Nobel Prize for Medicine.
India's estimated malaria cases fell from 6.4 million in 2017 to about 2 million in 2023, and the country exited the WHO's High Burden to High Impact group in 2024.
India aims for zero indigenous malaria cases by 2027 and elimination by 2030 under the National Framework for Malaria Elimination (2016-2030).
