Satellites carry a fixed quantity of propellant; once it is spent, a working satellite becomes junk and its orbital slot becomes a hazard. Two technologies described by founders in this interaction address that. Active debris removal uses a robotic spacecraft that rendezvouses with a defunct satellite, physically captures it and drags it out of orbit. In-orbit docking and refuelling instead extends the working life of a healthy satellite by transferring propellant in space - the reason one founder described the goal as a fuel station in space. Both depend on precise rendezvous and docking in orbit, and both matter for the growing problem of congestion and debris in low Earth orbit.
Simple Analogy: A satellite today is a car with a welded fuel cap: when the tank runs dry the whole car is abandoned on the road. Debris removal is the tow truck; in-orbit refuelling is the petrol pump.
Chandrayaan-3 targeted the southern high latitudes because permanently shadowed craters there are believed to hold water ice - a resource for future missions, and the reason several countries are aiming at that region.
