Chandrayaan-3 was launched on 14 July 2023 aboard an LVM3 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, and its Vikram lander made a controlled soft landing in the Moon's south polar region on 23 August 2023. The Pragyan rover rolled out afterwards and carried out in-situ elemental analysis of the lunar soil, confirming the presence of sulphur. The mission followed Chandrayaan-2, whose lander had crashed in 2019, so the success also showed that ISRO had corrected the descent and navigation problems of the earlier attempt. Days after the landing the Government of India declared 23 August as National Space Day, and the touchdown site was named Shiv Shakti Point. The observance is built as an outreach event: ISRO centres, schools, colleges and science institutions run exhibitions, quizzes, model-making contests and interactions with scientists to pull students towards space science.
