The Ministry of Education released a decadal performance review of Indian higher education on 30 August 2026, drawing on All India Survey on Higher Education data from 2014-15 to 2023-24.
Total enrolment rose 31.5 per cent from 3.42 crore to 4.50 crore, and the Gross Enrolment Ratio climbed from 23.7 to 30.0 against the NEP 2020 target of 50 per cent by 2035.
PhD enrolment grew the fastest of any level, up 192.9 per cent from 1.17 lakh to 3.43 lakh, while integrated programmes rose 301.4 per cent.
Female GER reached 31.2 against a male GER of 28.9, exceeding it for the seventh consecutive year, and the Gender Parity Index improved from 0.92 to 1.08.
Persistent gaps remain in graduate employability and in the enrolment of women with benchmark disabilities.
