NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) signed a commercial agreement on 30 August 2026 with Uzbekistan's National Interbank Processing Centre JSC (NIPC), operator of the national payment system HUMO.
Indian UPI users can now scan Uzbekistan's national interoperable QR code, UZQR, at merchant outlets and pay directly from their Indian bank accounts.
The arrangement covers person-to-merchant (P2M) payments only and was cleared by both the Reserve Bank of India and the Central Bank of Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan becomes the 11th country where UPI is accepted, after Singapore, UAE, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Greece.
The announcement came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Uzbekistan.
A different model - a full person-to-person remittance linkage between two fast payment systems, not merely QR-based merchant acceptance. Contrast the two in answers on cross-border payments.
UPI, Aadhaar and DigiLocker form the India Stack, which India has promoted as an exportable DPI template, including through its G20 presidency.
NIPL's other export product; RuPay cards are accepted through partner card networks in several countries, a card-based route distinct from UPI's QR route.
