Germany Beat Spain 1-0 to Retain FIH Men's Hockey World Cup Title

The final was a defensive contest that turned on a single passage of play. Neither side scored in the first half: Germany won an early penalty corner in the second minute that Benedikt Schwarzhaupt could not convert, and Spain's first, in the ninth minute, went the same way. Spain came out stronger after the interval and won a penalty corner in the 39th minute when Pol Verdiell Cabre was fouled in the circle, but captain Marc Miralles dragged his flick wide. Five minutes later Germany worked the ball across both wings to open space for Michel Struthoff, who deflected it past a goalkeeper caught out of position for what proved the only goal of the match. Spain pressed hard in the closing quarter, won another penalty corner in the 45th minute, and with four minutes left coach Max Caldas withdrew goalkeeper Luis Calzado for an extra outfield player. The gamble did not pay: Germany's defence held and the scoreline stood. Spain had the greater share of possession and of penalty corners across the match, which is the statistic that will sting - they have now lost three World Cup finals and remain the strongest European side never to have won the tournament.
