The 88th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle was held on 30 August 2026 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, as a National Sports Day edition organised in collaboration with BRICS under the banner 'BRICS Run & Ride 2026', and simultaneously at more than 25,000 locations across the country.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya led the ride with Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir, wrestler Sangram Singh and actor Madhurima Tuli, before a crowd of over 5,000; ambassadors and envoys of BRICS member and partner countries took part.
Dr Mandaviya linked the edition to India's hosting of the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam on 12-13 September, and described cycling as delivering three benefits at once - fitness, reduced pollution and easier traffic.
A national campaign to make physical activity part of daily life, launched by the Prime Minister on 29 August 2019 - National Sports Day - at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi.
Key: Run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports; its stated mission is behavioural change towards a physically active lifestyle rather than the building of infrastructure. Fit India Sundays on Cycle is one of its weekly programmes.
A weekly Sunday morning cycling drive conceived by Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, now in its 88th edition, intended to normalise cycling as both exercise and everyday transport.
Key: Organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the Cycling Federation of India, the Raahgiri Foundation and MY Bharat, and conducted across all States and Union Territories through the Sports Authority of India and Khelo India network - SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence, SAI Training Centres, Khelo India State Centres of Excellence and Khelo India Centres.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports programme for grassroots sport, talent identification and sports infrastructure; the first Khelo India School Games were held in New Delhi from 31 January to 8 February 2018 and the series later became the Khelo India Youth Games.
Key: Its physical network - Khelo India Centres and State Centres of Excellence - is what allows a single-day national event such as Sundays on Cycle to be held at more than 25,000 locations at once. The 2018 games began with 18 disciplines including athletics, hockey, kabaddi, kho kho and shooting.
Grouping of major emerging economies; the acronym BRIC was coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill in 2001 and the first leaders' summit was held at Yekaterinburg, Russia, in June 2009, with South Africa joining thereafter. It now has 11 members - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The BRICS development bank, established at the 6th BRICS Summit in Fortaleza in 2014 to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects. The Contingent Reserve Arrangement, a currency-swap facility of USD 100 billion, was created in the same year.

Running a fitness event with BRICS envoys a fortnight before the summit is standard host-country practice - the sporting, cultural and business tracks around a summit are as examinable as the leaders' declaration itself. Note the presence of the MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) at what was nominally a sports event.
The grouping grew from five members to eleven through the expansion agreed in 2023 and the accessions that followed; Indonesia joined in 2025 as the first Southeast Asian member. India's 2026 chairship is its fourth, after 2012, 2016 and 2021.
The three benefits named by the Minister - fitness, reduced pollution and eased congestion - are the standard case for non-motorised transport in urban mobility policy, which is why the Raahgiri Foundation, a car-free-streets movement, is a delivery partner rather than a sports body.
