Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are holding the first meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee created under their new trilateral pact, at Istanbul on 31 August 2026.
The alliance was established on 7 August 2026 through the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed at Mecca by the leaders of the three countries.
The pact contains a collective security clause under which an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all three, modelled on Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
The committee brings together the foreign ministers, defence ministers and military chiefs of staff of the three states.
The agenda covers international security, collective military capability, interoperability, joint defence production and counterterrorism coordination.

A collective defence clause commits every member of an alliance to treat an armed attack on any one of them as an attack on all, and to respond. The best known example is Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, signed in 1949, which NATO has invoked exactly once, after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States. Such clauses work mainly through deterrence: the cost of attacking any single member is raised to the cost of confronting the whole group. Their weakness is that the response each member owes is usually left undefined, so the political will of members at the moment of crisis decides what the clause is actually worth.
Simple Analogy: It works like a neighbourhood watch agreement. Nobody specifies exactly what each household will do if a house is broken into, but a burglar who knows the whole street will respond is less likely to try the first door.
