PM Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on 12 September 2026 on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, their first meeting since Tianjin in August 2025.
Modi said ties must rest on 'three mutuals' - mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest - and that peace in border areas is the essential basis of the relationship.
Both sides committed to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable boundary settlement and to addressing the structural trade imbalance and supply-chain issues.
It was Xi's first visit to India since the 2019 Mamallapuram informal summit.
Set up in 2003 to explore a framework for boundary settlement from the political perspective of the overall relationship - the same phrase used in the 2026 readout. 24th round: New Delhi, 19 August 2025; 25th round: Beijing, 25 August 2026, with an eight-point consensus. The 26th round is due in India.
Set up in 2012 for consultation on managing border areas and for communication between border personnel; an official-level forum that supports the SR talks
The LAC is the de facto line separating Indian- and Chinese-held territory. It is not a demarcated international border. India puts its length at about 3,488 km; China claims it is roughly 2,000 km. The gap reflects claims that do not match.
