A 1.85-km, four-lane road at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, built by Jindal Steel with CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), received the Guinness World Records title for the longest road built exclusively with processed steel slag aggregates on 12 September 2026.
About 2 lakh tonnes of processed electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slag were used across the full pavement depth, and the road is designed for 65 million standard axles of heavy traffic.
Steel slag roads are claimed to be 30-40% cheaper and to last up to three times longer than standard bitumen roads.
The two partners signed a technology transfer agreement and launched 'SteelGrit', a brand of processed slag aggregates.
A by-product of steel-making in electric arc or basic oxygen furnaces, made mainly of calcium, magnesium, manganese and aluminium silicates and oxides. Once processed, its high crushing strength and skid resistance let it replace quarried stone aggregate.
Simple Analogy: A steel plant's leftover rock replacing stone blasted from hills.
