President appoints Dinesh Sharma Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
•
The President of India has appointed Dr Dinesh Sharma as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office.
•
The announcement was issued as a Press Communique by the President's Secretariat on 5 September 2026.
•
He succeeds Admiral (Retd) Devendra Kumar Joshi, who had held the post since 8 October 2017.

Indore Metro Priority Corridor-2 opened; network reaches 16 stations over 17 km

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated Indore Metro Priority Corridor-2 on 5 September 2026, with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav present.
•
The new Phase-I (Reach-II) stretch runs about 11 km with 11 stations from Super Corridor-3 to Malviya Nagar Chauraha, built at an estimated Rs 2,850 crore.
•
Indore Metro now has 16 operational stations over roughly 17 km, at a cumulative project cost of about Rs 4,370 crore.

NCSC Issues Notice to Punjab Over SC Reservation in 1,013 Lecturer Posts
•
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has ordered an inquiry, under Article 338 of the Constitution, into alleged non-implementation of reservation in the recruitment of lecturers by the Punjab Education Department.
•
The complaint, from Rajya Sabha MP Shri Tarun Chugh, alleges that Scheduled Caste candidates were denied reservation benefits in recruitment to 1,013 lecturer posts.
•
A notice to the Chief Secretary of Punjab seeks the facts, the action taken and all related records including the recruitment notification and the reservation roster, within seven days.

The Common Research and Technology Development Hub on Affordable Healthcare at IIT Kharagpur has completed its grant-supported phase and entered a self-sustaining phase, meeting costs through user fees, industry sponsorships and translational partnerships.
•
It was inaugurated by Dr N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and Director General, CSIR.
•
Established in 2019 under the DSIR's CRTDH scheme, the 5,000 sq ft hub has facilitated over 20 technology transfers and trained frontline health workers running rural health units in areas including the Sundarbans and Birbhum.

Coal India Supplies 322.90 MT in April-August as Monsoon Effect Wanes

Coal India Limited supplied 322.90 million tonnes of coal during April-August of the current fiscal, 6.70% above the 302.60 MT of the same period a year earlier.
•
August 2026-27 supplies were 60.60 MT, up 5.50%, with power sector supplies rising 4.5% to 48.46 MT.
•
CIL holds a pithead stock cushion of 76 MT and 46 MT of ready-to-mine exposed coal, and has offered power plants road-mode lifting over and above Annual Contracted Quantities under their Fuel Supply Agreements.

President Confers National Awards to Teachers on 82 Educators Across Three Streams

President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Awards to Teachers in New Delhi on 5 September 2026, Teachers' Day.

Coal Ministry Clarifies Status of Rs 37,500 Crore Coal Gasification Scheme

The Ministry of Coal rejected press reports that its Rs 37,500 crore Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects had attracted no applications, noting the first window was still open.

The scheme was approved by the Union Cabinet on 13 May 2026 to convert domestic coal and lignite into syngas, methanol, ammonia and urea and cut dependence on imported feedstock.

Talcher Fertilizers Limited and NTPC Limited had already applied through the online portal; the first-round deadline was 7 September 2026.

ECLGS 5.0: Rs 2.55 Lakh Crore Credit Guarantee Cover for MSMEs and Airlines
•
ECLGS 5.0, approved on 5 May 2026, extends government-backed credit guarantees to businesses hit by external economic shocks, targeting an additional credit flow of up to Rs 2.55 lakh crore.
•
It is run by the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC) and covers MSMEs, eligible non-MSME borrowers and scheduled passenger airline companies through Member Lending Institutions.
•
Guarantee cover is 100% for MSMEs and 90% for eligible non-MSMEs and airlines, with no guarantee fee payable by lenders.
