In his 80th Independence Day address from the Red Fort on 15 August 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide talent hunt to identify sporting talent among children aged 5 to 15.
The search is to cover villages, small towns, cities and schools, and is tied to India's ambition of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.
The Prime Minister noted that the Olympics span about 40 disciplines and roughly 325 to 350 medal events, in many of which India has no athletes at all.
It builds on KIRTI, the Khelo India Rising Talent Identification programme, which assesses school children aged 9 to 18.
