India already runs a structured talent-identification programme. KIRTI - Khelo India Rising Talent Identification - was launched in its first phase at Chandigarh on 12 March 2024, with a second phase inaugurated in New Delhi on 19 July 2024. It targets school children aged 9 to 18, uses ICT-based assessment tools, and treats the district as the unit of assessment, with the stated aim of 20 lakh assessments in 2024-25 by bringing all states on board. Its first phase drew 3,62,683 registrations across 70 centres and completed close to 51,000 assessments in 28 states and Union Territories. A hunt starting at age 5 would push identification below KIRTI's floor and widen the funnel that feeds it.

Elite performance in most Olympic disciplines is built over a decade or more of structured training, so the age at which a child is first identified largely decides whether they can reach that level. Starting between 5 and 15 leaves room to develop physical qualities such as strength, endurance and flexibility, to build sport-specific technique under scientific coaching, and to move a child through school, state and national competition before international exposure. The arithmetic is also simple: a child who is 10 in 2026 will be 20 in 2036. The second reason is breadth rather than depth - with 325 to 350 medal events on offer, India's absence from entire disciplines costs more medals than weak performance in the ones it does contest.
