Chennai-based fabless startup Aheesa Digital Innovations achieved first-pass silicon success for VIHAAN, an indigenous broadband networking System-on-Chip, announced by MeitY on 15 August 2026.
VIHAAN is built on the open RISC-V architecture and runs on C-DAC's indigenous 64-bit VEGA processor core, and is designed for fibre-to-the-home routers and optical network terminals.
The chip was developed with support from the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme under the Semicon India Programme; production tape-out is targeted for 2027.
A chip design is 'taped out' - sent to a foundry for fabrication - only after simulation and verification. When the fabricated chip works to specification on its very first fabrication run, without needing a redesign and a fresh set of masks, the team is said to have achieved first-pass silicon. Because each re-spin costs both money and several months, first-pass success is treated as a benchmark of design and verification maturity rather than a mere technical footnote.
Simple Analogy: It is the difference between a building that passes inspection the first time and one that has to be partly demolished and rebuilt - the finished structure may look identical, but the first team knew exactly what it was doing.
