SpaceX launched two Falcon 9 rockets from opposite coasts of the United States on 15 August 2026, about 38 minutes apart - its shortest ever interval between two orbital missions.
The first lifted off at 9:12 pm EDT from Cape Canaveral with eight Globalstar satellites; the second at 9:50 pm EDT from Vandenberg with the classified USSF-366 payload for the US Space Force.
The previous record was 65 minutes, set on 31 August 2024 during back-to-back Starlink missions.
Recovery of the second mission's booster marked the 650th successful landing of a Falcon booster.
Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket whose first stage is designed to be recovered and flown again, while the second stage is expended. After separation the booster flips, relights its engines and lands either on a ground pad, such as Landing Zone 40 at Cape Canaveral, or on an autonomous drone ship at sea when the mission profile leaves too little fuel to fly back. The two boosters on this record night had already flown 13 and 17 times respectively - it is that reuse, not new production, which lets a company attempt two launches within an hour.
Simple Analogy: Airlines do not build a new aircraft for each flight; the whole economics of the fleet depends on it landing intact.
