The Prime Minister paid tribute to Sri Aurobindo on his birth anniversary, which falls on 15 August, describing him as a philosopher, nationalist, poet and thinker who gave his life to India's freedom and to the wider quest for human progress.
Sri Aurobindo was born on 15 August 1872 in Calcutta and died on 5 December 1950 at Pondicherry — the coincidence of his birthday with India's Independence Day is why the tribute is issued each 15 August.
He belongs to two distinct phases of Indian history that examiners test separately: the Extremist leadership of the Swadeshi years, 1905-1910, and the philosophy of Integral Yoga developed at Pondicherry thereafter.
Born in Calcutta
Studies at King's College, Cambridge; prepares for the Indian Civil Service
Returns to India and enters the service of the princely state of Baroda, later teaching at Baroda College
The Partition of Bengal; he leaves Baroda for Calcutta and joins the front rank of the Nationalist movement during the Swadeshi agitation
Presides over the Nationalist conference at Surat, where the Congress splits between Moderates and Nationalists
Arrested in connection with the Alipore Bomb Conspiracy Case
Acquitted after being defended by C. R. Das; delivers the Uttarpara Speech
Moves to Pondicherry and withdraws from active politics
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is formally established as he goes into seclusion and the Mother takes charge of the disciples
Dies at Pondicherry
The Mother founds Auroville, an experimental international township near Puducherry
Integral Yoga is the spiritual path Sri Aurobindo formulated at Pondicherry after withdrawing from politics. Where older systems typically ask the seeker to renounce the world in order to reach the divine, Integral Yoga is directed at transforming ordinary human life and consciousness rather than escaping it. His philosophical treatise The Life Divine sets out the underlying philosophy, The Synthesis of Yoga sets out the principles and methods, and Savitri — an epic poem in blank verse running to roughly 24,000 lines, built on a tale from the Mahabharata about a woman who conquers death — carries the same ideas of spiritual evolution in poetic form.
Simple Analogy: Most schools of yoga treat everyday life as a ladder to be climbed and then kicked away; Integral Yoga treats it as the material to be remade.

An experimental international township founded on Sri Aurobindo's vision of human unity
One of the national education institutions of the Swadeshi era; Sri Aurobindo served as its Principal
Sri Aurobindo presided over the Nationalist conference at Surat and, with Tilak, pressed the radical line that split the Congress into Moderates and Nationalists — the standard reference point for the Extremist phase
The 1905 partition is what pulled him out of Baroda and into Calcutta politics. Note that this is the partition of Bengal province by Lord Curzon's administration, entirely distinct from the Partition of India in 1947
The 1908-09 trial links him to the revolutionary strand in Bengal and to C. R. Das, who defended him and secured his acquittal — a pairing that recurs in personality-based questions
His birth anniversary shares a date with Independence Day, which is why tributes to him appear in the Independence Day news cycle every year rather than on a separate occasion
