India's trucking market is split among thousands of small operators, so no single buyer orders enough electric trucks to justify a charging corridor or a cheap loan. Pooling their demand creates a block large enough for manufacturers, financiers and charge point operators to plan against.

India's five climate pledges announced at COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021 — 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030, 50% of energy needs from renewables by 2030, a 1 billion tonne cut in projected cumulative emissions, a 45% cut in emissions intensity of GDP from 2005 levels, and net zero by 2070. Freight electrification is aimed squarely at the last of these.
India moved directly from BS-IV to BS-VI emission norms nationwide on 1 April 2020, skipping BS-V; the norms are framed by the MoEFCC and implemented through the CPCB, and they set the tailpipe baseline that zero-emission trucks displace.
