Pollen Study Links Harappan Civilization's Shrinkage to the Global '4.2 ka Event'
•
A pollen-based study by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) links the Harappan Civilization's shrinkage to the global '4.2 ka event' — an abrupt dry-climate shift around 4,200 years before present.

A weak Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) between roughly 5,100 and 4,000 years BP disrupted seasonal flooding along the Indus and Ghaggar-Hakra rivers, driving population migration to the east Ganga plains.
•
The study analysed a radiocarbon-dated sediment core from Deoria Tal, a Garhwal Himalaya lake, and links the weak ISM to a southward-shifted ITCZ, a strong El Niño phase and a negative Indian Ocean Dipole.
