CeNS team builds metal-free organic photocatalyst for solar hydrogen from water
•
Researchers at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, have combined a naturally occurring amino acid (aspartic acid) with the light-absorbing organic molecule perylene diimide to make a completely metal-free photocatalyst for splitting water with sunlight.
•
The molecules self-assemble in water into ordered two-dimensional nanosheets, broadening light absorption, improving charge separation and increasing catalytic surface area without any change in chemical composition; the assembled material produced nearly 18% higher photocurrent than its bulk form.
•
Led by Dr Goutam Ghosh and Dr Ashutosh K. Singh, the work was published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A and points to solar hydrogen production without costly or scarce precious metals.
